Major Free Food pantries /Food Banks in the State

Food banks and free food pantries listed below help families that are facing hunger. The pantries are mostly located at churches and non-profits in the region. Most of the free food pantry locations may have an application process, which usually requires proof of income, residency proof etc. Using donations from the community, and relying on volunteers, the locations may pass out free boxes of food or serve a meal. below listed are the major food banks in the state.

This center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that collects and distributes food and groceries through a 380+ member network that operates in 11 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania. Through special events, fund raising, donations, agreements with local charities and community partnerships, the Food Bank gathers food at a 94,000 square foot warehouse in Duquesne, PA.

The Food Bank warehouse stores a wide variety of groceries, free canned items and other types of non-perishable foods for qualified people. The warehouse contains a wide variety of food items that are purchased from both state and federal government programs and used specifically for distribution to the pantries.

In addition, donated goods are available for Emergency boxes. These are generally available to pantries to supplement the other food programs as well available to registered non-profit organizations, churches and local charities. The boxes and resources are offered for purchase at a low per-unit cost. Supplemental foods are acquired through donations and from companies such as Nabisco, America’s Second Harvest, and through the Fall Food Drive.

The Westmoreland County Food Bank is a privately run, not-for-profit organization that supplies food and groceries to hungry people and families through a network of assistance programs in Westmoreland County. Their 40,000 square foot facility is located in Delmont, Pennsylvania. Of each dollar donated to WCFB, $.97 goes to food and food programs. The non-profit serves over 7,000 disadvantaged families each month throughout Westmoreland County.
