Free Food pantries /Food Banks

Food banks and free food pantries listed below help families that are facing hunger. The pantries are mostly located at churches and non-profits in the region. Most of the free food pantry locations may have an application process, which usually requires proof of income, residency proof etc. Using donations from the community, and relying on volunteers, the locations may pass out free boxes of food or serve a meal.

Ball-Chatham Food Pantry – Presbyterian Church

A phone application is needed. If approved for assistance, a time will be set up with the applicant to meet with a volunteer to pick up free food and groceries at the Chatham Presbyterian Church. In order to receive help you also must live in the Ball-Chatham school district or attend a church in the area.

This particular charity ministry offers a so called “hand of hope” to those in need of food, clothing, holiday meals, and other support, even including counseling or prayer. Both Christmas and Thanksgiving meals may be served in Sangamon County.

The assistance is offered as part of the Crisis Assistance & Advocacy Office. Household items and canned goods, perishable food, government commodities and other items are available to those in need in Sangamon County. Household items offered can include towels, blankets, sheets and small kitchen supplies as well.

This is a pantry known as “choice”, which allows people to shop and pick out groceries for themselves and their families. As resources allow, up to three- to four-days’ worth of free food is provided and can include meat, vegetables and fruits, spaghetti, canned chili or meats, soup, crackers, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese. There may also be packaged noodle dishes, cereals, bread, and other miscellaneous donated items, such as cake mixes or tea and sugar.

Another choice food pantry, similar to above. Free Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter meals are served too. Other social services, including emergency financial aid for bills or rent, may be offered to low income or unemployed Sangamon families.
